Hiking on South Mountain Reservation

The days of cardigans and coats seem ancient. As August rears its head, we’re still appreciating the gorgeous summer NJ weather while we can. Before we’re forced to replace our air conditioners with heaters, we need to enjoy the heat and step outside more often. However, choosing what activities to partake in becomes tricky. There are so many things to do outside! Do you go birdwatching or walking or even sleep all day (but outside)? Luckily, you can do all of those things in the South Mountain Reservation in Essex County.

Well, except for sleep all day.

But who would want to sleep when you have access to 2,112 acres of flora and fauna to explore? The reservation stretches through Maplewood, Millburn, South Orange, and West Orange. For those who appreciate the aqueous aspects of nature, check out the Hemlock Falls; this beautiful 25-foot waterfall cascades over mossy rocks and is definitely a stunner (pictured to the right)!

The reservation is also popular amongst runners for its trails. Those looking for a short excursion can go on the Oakdale trail, which only goes for a mile. On the flip side, the Lenape trail branches out for 6 whole miles. Don’t worry - if you’re allergic to running like I am (it is a REAL condition, I swear) you can always walk and take in the scenic views. Here’s a trail map, downloadable on the Essex County Parks website, which contains detailed info about the park.

For me, the most enticing thing about this natural paradise has nothing to do with nature. In fact, one could say it pertains to a slightly otherworldly force. That’s right - this reservation has a fairy trail. I know. Apparently others were as excited as I was upon discovering this information; a few years ago, the New York Times wrote an article about it! You can take a walk in the woods and keep an eye out for miniature woodland houses. One can find this enchanted wonderland along the Rahway trail. While keeping your eyes peeled for tiny fairy homes, it’s important to respect their community and not disturb the houses!

As more people fortunately become vaccinated, we’re eager to change out of our sweatpants and rush into the great outdoors that Jersey prides itself on. For those in Northern Jersey, I think the South Mountain Reservation is a great place to visit to have a workout, get the hiking group together to have some fun, or just get a breath of fresh air. And who knows - maybe you’ll find something magical.
