Jane the Virgin

This show is truly unlike any other. Based on telenovelas, or Latin American soap operas, Jane the Virgin will leave you laughing, crying, and shocked, all in one episode. The show is perfect for binge-watching, especially because of its irresistible cliffhangers and plot twists. Each character is lovable in their own way– even the villains.

The main plot of the show follows Jane Villanueva, a 23-year-old aspiring writer, who happens to be a virgin when she is accidentally artificially inseminated. But in truth, the show is so much more than that. Jane the Virgin grapples with struggles with identity, immigration laws, unconventional families, and obstacles that come about when following one’s dream. If you’re looking for a show that highlights diversity, the importance of self-discovery, and an all-around ingeniously crafted show, Jane the Virgin is undoubtedly for you.

Never Have I Ever

Written by Mindy Kaling, well known for her role on The Office as Kelly, Never Have I Ever showcases to viewers a realistic depiction of what growing up is really like. The protagonist, Devi Vishwakumar, is an Indian-American teenager, who struggles to bounce back from her overwhelmingly horrible freshman year of high school. Devi attempts to compensate for her lack of popularity in various ways, which ultimately force her to choose between her friends or a chance to be at the top of the high school food chain. Never Have I Ever boasts characters from all backgrounds, each having their own obstacles to overcome. As the daughter of immigrants myself, I found myself connecting to Devi’s problems all throughout the show. Never Have I Ever is the perfect series to watch if you’re in the mood for something in the coming-of-age genre. Like Jane the Virgin, be prepared to laugh until your ribs hurt, and to cry until you run out of tissues.

Next time it’s pouring outside and you’re left with nothing to do, don’t hesitate to log onto Netflix and click on one of these shows- I promise you, you won’t regret it.

Chloe Lee

Hi! I’m Chloe Lee and I’m a writer for The Reel. I have lived in Summit my entire life and it’s been a surreal experience being able to give back to a community that has done so much for me. Outside of The Reel, I spend my time writing, watching films, and traveling – or at least fantasizing about my next adventure post-pandemic.
