The Perfect Grilled Cheese

The grilled cheese is one of the most beloved sandwiches known to humankind. However, I fear that it still doesn’t get enough love. Sure, one can just put a slice of cheese between two slices of bread, but doesn’t it deserve more thought than that? With the right amount of attention, you can elevate these staple sandwiches to their full potential. Since we need to cozy up in these cold winter days, I’m going to let you in on my sandwich secrets.

Technique

What good is a grilled cheese if you don’t know how to make one? If you’re hungry, it’s essential that you make your sandwich as efficiently as possible. For starters, you can place a frying pan over low heat before you construct your sandwich. The pan will be preheated when you start cooking the sandwich, speeding up your process. Another time management tool you can utilize is placing a lid over your sandwich. If you keep all the heat contained, the cheese will melt faster! Also, why would you not want melty cheese? Finally, you need to choose an agent to spread on the outer layers of your bread. Some people opt for mayo, but I personally prefer butter or margarine.

Choice of Bread and Cheese

Everyone’s entitled to their own preferences when it comes to sandwich bread; however, my preferences are, of course, inherently correct. Rye bread’s distinctive flavor makes every bite stand out. If you’re looking for something mellow, my recommendation is whole wheat - you can’t go wrong with its versatility. Onto the star of the sandwich - your choice of dairy matters. Shredded cheese is fine, but can fall out while flipping your bread. I personally have no problem with this, but if you do, stick to slices. My choice in cheese is either provolone or cheddar. Cheddar has a more robust profile in comparison to provolone, but they’re both tried and true. Additionally, I’d advise against mozzarella, which becomes very chewy when cooked.

Seasoning

This is where the fun begins! I was experimenting with my sandwich one day when I decided to add a dash of dried rosemary on my bread. To this day, I swear by it. It adds an aromatic flair to an otherwise simple sandwich. Some more orthodox herbs include oregano and basil. Don’t stop at dried spices - condiments can add the pop you never knew your grilled cheese needed. I’ve been known to enjoy mustard grilled cheese with a cup of soup on many occasions!

I hope that this list helps with your adventures in cheese and bread. If you don’t know how it’ll turn out, just try it. Be not afraid of your sandwich potential, friend. Who knows - you could make the next viral cooking trend. Experiment and have fun with a sandwich that everyone loves!
