Top Gun: Maverick | Movie Review

Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the 1986 blockbuster, Top Gun has just recently been released. The film centers around Academy Award nominee Tom Cruise’s character, Pete Mitchell, better known as Maverick, a gutsy naval aviator.

The film shows Maverick’s attempt at training a team of elite aviators for a special, yet dangerous assignment. When watching the trailer for the film I was very excited but wasn’t quite sure how exactly a 36-year-later sequel to such a famous movie could be executed just as well as the first, but when I finally saw the film, I was thrilled.

The creators of the film were able to recreate some of the heartwarming moments from the first film as well as one of Top Gun’s classic characters, Iceman, played by the legendary Val Kilmer. Not only did Top Gun: Maverick successfully return to its roots, but it also included a new exciting story and a fresh cast, including well known Miles Teller as Rooster, and Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly as Penny. There was wonderful chemistry between Connelly and Cruise throughout the film as well as an engaging feud-turned-friendship between Cruise and Teller’s characters.

Aside from the characters, the stunts, direction, and cinematography were undoubtedly some of the best I’ve ever seen. This film has already grossed over $1 billion at the global box office, making it the highest grossing movie of 2022. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend seeing Top Gun: Maverick on the big screen.
